Archivist is an AI-enhanced extension for Visual Studio Code, offering semantic search across any codebase. It excels at rapidly searching code and providing concise summaries of the code's functionality.
Archivist automatically updates its index as you modify code, ensuring current and precise search results. When first used, Archivist indexes the codebase and creates a .archivist directory containing a config.json file.
This configuration file enables excluding files from search using gitignore syntax. The extension starts indexing each codebase, allowing queries within minutes.
Queries are executed quickly, and any saved changes to the codebase become searchable instantly. Currently, Archivist supports and indexes code in Python, Java, TypeScript, JavaScript, TSX, JSX, and C++.
Code files in unsupported languages are ignored during indexing. Plans are in place to add more supported languages in future releases. Archivist prioritizes privacy and does not store your code or personal information.
